Lower Kaleköy Dam and HEPP (Concession)
Lower Kaleköy hydroelectric power plant located in Bingöl province, eastern Türkiye.
The composite dam is 110-meter tall from the streambed, has a total crest length of 945 meters, a rock-fill volume of 3,700,000 m3, and a roller-compacted-concrete (RCC) volume of 1,900,000 m3. It impounds a reservoir with a storage capacity of 600 million m3.
The powerhouse has three (3) individual 155.49 MW Francis-turbine, each paired with its vertical axis synchronous generators, and a 33.53 MW eco-flow unit, reaching a total installed reliable capacity of 500.10 MW. It has an average annual clean renewable electricity production of 1,780 GWh.
Kalehan Energy Company, which is incorporated by Özaltın and Cengiz Investment Companies, and in which each founder owns fifty percent shares, implemented Lower Kaleköy hydropower station on the Murat River on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis for a concession period of 49 years. It is the third of four cascade hydropower stations developed by Kalehan Energy Company under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract with a combined capacity of 2,350 MW.
The project was launched in July 2016, with the first unit starting its trial-running power generation in September 2019, and with all units operational by December 2019. The Lower Kaleköy hydropower development helps significantly increasing the economic growth in Türkiye, reduces atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions, and combats its climate change.
